What to do after Spring Break in Spanish Class?

Spring break has come to and end!

For some Spanish teachers, that means 8 more weeks of school until Summer Break! (For me, I’ll be teaching until the end of June, but think of me while you are out sun bathing on a Wednesday afternoon in June!!)

As students come back into our classrooms (aka, what I always refer to as their FAVORITE PLACE IN THE WHOLE ENTIRE WOLRD), students may be feeling all sorts of emotions.

There are some who are probably running on 3 hours of sleep, and others who have been waiting to reconnect with friends and get back into a routine again!

As a world language teacher, we all know that differentiation and meeting the needs of our students is a top priority. How we approach welcoming students back into the classroom after Spring Break (or any break) is no different!

Here are some no prep to low prep ideas to help you get students back into your Spanish classroom routine:

  1. Find Someone Who: Create a few past-tense questions that encourage students to get moving around the room to connect with others while talking about what they may have did over break! (Ie: Find someone who; slept, drank milk, played video games, etc!)

  2. Two Truths and a Lie: Have students draw or write two things that they did over break, and one thing they did not do. Discuss them and have students vote for the lie!

  3. Four Corners: Divide your classroom up into 4 rooms based on how frequent students did an activity over Spring break. (ie: mucho, un poco, de vez en cuando, nunca). Then state an activity that students could have done over Spring break (ie: sleep/dormir). Students should then move to the corresponding corner of the room.

  4. Blooket: I am a sucker for Blooket! It is always a go-to for me. If you’ve been working on a unit pre-break, have them play with vocabulary words you’ve been using in your Spanish class! If you finished a unit before Spring Break, create a Blooket (or find one) with high-frequency verbs to refresh students’ memories!

  5. Music: Do students have a favorite song they can review? Do you have a new one you want to share with them? (Mine are loving Maníaca by Abraham Mateo at the moment!) Introduce a song on your first day back! You can movietalk the music video, have students fill in the blanks to the lyrics, put lyrics in order, draw what lyrics mean, etc!

  6. Instragram Posts: Have students draw one Instagram inspired post about what they did over Spring Break. Encourage them to turn an ordinary activity (such as eating breakfast) into something that is Instagram worthy! Then, look at them together as a class, decide what the student did, and even come up with a caption!

  7. This or That: A favorite of mine! There are so many ways to include a This or That into your classroom. (And I am going to shamelessly promote my Spring This or That incase you’d like to share it with your students! 😅)

And that’s it!

I’m hoping that both you and your students will ease back into your classroom routine after Spring Break!

May you have blue skys, lots of sunshine, and coffee…umm…..I mean… natural energy as you make your way back!

-From my classroom to yours, con mucho amor 🧡,
